Making the Leap

Transitioning from the Public Sector to the Private Sector in Uncertain Times

STRATEGIC MENTORING PROGRAM

Are You Ready to Make the Leap?

There's always a hesitation before making a major change...or leap.

Any transition from the public sector to the private sector involves carefully considering the distance over which you must leap:

  • Do you have the knowledge about what awaits you on the other side?

  • Have you weighed the pros and cons about making that leap?

  • Once you get on the other side, are you prepared to continue your career path in a new landscape with new expectations?

Is transitioning to the private sector for YOU...in uncertain times?

Depending on your current job in the public sector, you may be facing a furlough (so-called "non-essential" positions) or working lots of overtime (especially true for a variety of First Responders).

Or, maybe you're nearing retirement and have been thinking about taking knowledge and expertise you've gained in the public sector and striking out on a new career in the private sector.

Well, hold on just a minute...

...there are some potential challenges you'll have to address before that can happen. First and foremost is the issue of the global pandemic.

Here’s the current lay of the land in the private sector as companies work through immediate, near-term, and long-term priorities reshuffled by the global pandemic, such as those shown in the 5 Stages of Dealing with Chaos.

Most companies are working through Phases 2 and 3, and a few are trying to get a view over the horizon in Phases 4 and 5. Smart public sector professionals considering an alternative career strategy will follow the advice of NHL Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky to “go where the puck is going to be; not where it is now.”

There's only one problem...

There are 40 million other private sector workers who have been furloughed or laid off as of May 28, 2020 who are also trying to get to the spot where the puck is going.

According to an April 2020 poll by the Gallup Organization, a record-high 25% of employed U.S. adults, up from 8% one year ago, think they are likely to be laid off in the next year.

A successful career change to the private sector - in any economy - requires the requisite experience, skills, and expertise, but there's more to it than that:

  • There's more to it because you have to understand how the hiring
process differs from the public sector

  • There's more to it because you need to have some digital footprint
in social media that conveys your knowledge and expertise to
    decision makers and hiring managers
    in the private sector

  • There's more to it because of how the private sector operates from a bottom-line perspective vs. a public sector priority/goals approach

  • There's more to it because you have more individual accountability
    and responsibility
for helping the private sector organization reach
    stated objectives

  • There's more to it because you need more awareness of social and situational influences on hiring decisions

  • There's more to it because you need the right balance of impression management language during the hiring and interview process

  • There's more to it because you have more control of what information
to provide, how to provide it, and when to provide
it vs. a "document dump" in the public sector

  • There's more to it because the private sector hiring decision is often influenced by subjective measures (first impressions, likability, trust) vs. objective criteria in the public sector

Ready to give up? Don't! There's a program that will help you with ALL of these challenges and more...

The Making the Leap Virtual Strategic Mentoring Program will show you how to overcome all of these challenges and much more working in the PRIVATE sector as an independent consultant or contractor or through one of many consulting/contracting agencies who service the PUBLIC sector. According to Project on Government Oversight (pogo.org), federal contractor compensation is 1.8 times the cost of federal employees’ compensation and benefits.

You have specific public sector expertise and developed a sphere of influence through your network of public sector contacts throughout your career...why not capitalize on the public sector's need for your specialized knowledge, skill, network, and experience as a consultant or contractor?

While this program will prepare you for "employee" positions in the private sector, you'll can get in that line with 26 million others hoping to land a position. The opportunities are far greater as a public sector consultant or contractor.

Is there a program out there that can get me where I need to go?

There is one such program: The Making the Leap Virtual Strategic Mentoring Program is an 8-week structured framework approach that is individually customized to show you exactly what you need to do and what you need to say so that you know how to…

  • Create a killer private-sector cover letter and achievement-focused résumé to get the job interviews you want—from someone who’s reviewed thousands of cover letters and résumés and hired hundreds of professionals

  • Engage decision makers and hiring managers to build that trust and familiarity through their social media channels

  • Position your public sector experience, skills, and knowledge so you come across as exactly the expert solution they’re looking for

In short, you’ll get the results and outcomes that will serve you as you move from one project contract to another, or one client consulting assignment to the next as the New Normal spreads around the globeWhile private sector employees have to worry about their jobs with every industry downturn, financial crisis, or recession, you will have chaos-resistant strategies that will see you through them all.
